When’s the last time you enjoyed listening to someone who sounds generic? LOL. Ummm, yeah – that doesn’t happen.
People love listening to speakers like Chris Rock, Tony Robbins and Jon Stewart because they’re dynamic and their personality shines through.
The best-selling books, best written blog posts and even the best sales pages are the same. An aura of personality just oozes from the page or the screen.
How can you express your personality when you’re writing?
»» WRITE FROM YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ««
#RealTalkMoment – The interwebs are a tad bit nosey, LOL! Your village wants to hear your story! The more you can share what you’ve actually experienced, the better. Trying to teach or compete in a market where you don’t have personal experience puts you at a distinct disadvantage against those who do have personal experience. The idea of faking it until you make it is a myth. Don’t get suckered into being something you are not, because you think it will make you build your business – quicker, sooner, faster! It will not. Your audience will read right through it.
When you’re writing about something you have personal experience in, that comes through. Speak from your experience. Don’t try to sound as if you’re more experienced than you are, but also don’t discount your successes.
Stand on your story – your past is your platform.
Take out a sheet of paper and brainstorm. What are some skills and experiences you’ve had that others would want to learn from?
»» GET EMOTIONAL ««
If something in the state of your industry is making you angry, don’t be afraid to say so. For example, if you’re in marketing, talk about how you dislike marketers taking advantage of people trying to learn to make money. If you are a blogger in the plus industry and you are tired of fashion houses not representing you, use your platform to voice your opinion.
On the other hand, if you find something inspiring, share that as well. For example, you find a great blog and have quickly grown to respect the author. Share the blog with your village. They’ll probably love it as well. It will also allow them to get a feel for the things you enjoy.
Instead of trying to come off as cool and distant, you’ll often connect with your village more if you actually express your inner thoughts.
»» Talk in a One on One Manner ««
When creating content for your blog or business, write as if you’re just talking to a friend.
When you’re talking to a friend, you sound casual and playful, but will occasionally get passionate about a topic. You won’t try to sound more professional than you are and will generally just let your voice out. Note: I am not saying that you should come off as disrespectful or using profanity in every sentence – that works for some people but if isn’t your thing – don’t make it your thing!
If you have trouble doing this, ask a friend to do a Skype call with you. Record it. Then have this call transcribed. Go back and watch the call and read the text – this is a great way to see your “cool self” in action.
How does the call sound? How does it read? What’s the “texture” of the transcript? Is it more casual or more personable than other content you’ve written? If so, use the feel of the transcript as a guideline to strive towards.
If you write from personal experience, talk about things you care about and speak in a casual yet passionate manner, like you would to a friend, then others will probably want to read more of what you write. If you talk impersonally, without emotion about topics you don’t actually have personal experience in, then chances are you won’t get much of a readership.
